INDONESIANS CLASH
North Moluccas Dispute
Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 11.45 p.m.) JAKARTA, January 9. Army headquarters said today that a number of civilians and soldiers were killed in an armed clash on Ternate Island, off the North Moluccas. Major Harsono, the official spokesman, said fighting had broken out between Army troops and a special police force. A military order recently sealed off the North Moluccas group, which fringes Dutch West New Guinea.
Ternate lies north of Siu, the Indonesian capital of West New Guinea—the disputed territory which Indonesia claims the Dutch should hand over. Major Harsono said the authorities of Ternate Seized and impounded two ships used as Army transport to the North Moluccas. It appeared that the troops on these ships had been deployed to give aid to the soldiers fighting the police.
The Army and the police were trying to solve the incident in a peaceful way, Major Harsono said.
