Police today searched for a bus passenger m at Middlesborough, Yorkshire, who tired of waiting for the driver to return and drove the bus home himself—with the other passengers’ approval. The incident happened on New Year’s Eve, when the bus was full and waiting to leave from the town centre for a housing estate five miles away. Work At Otira Very good progress has been made with the filling of the scoured gap in the railway embankment at Otira. In eight days 25,00 p yards of filling has been completed which has brought the bank to two-thirds its original height. They have worked in blazing sun, high winds and showers, but so far there has been no weather bad enough to hold up the reconstruction. Wellington Weather Yesterday was the hottest day this year in Wellington, the temperature at 11 a.m. being 69 degrees. The second hottest day was on January 2, when the temperature was almost 68 degrees. But rainfall in the city this month—4.lBin—has already exceeded the normal monthly average of 3.08 in. Gas From Oil Households and industry in Hastings were yesterday supplied with gas made completely from oil. It is the only town in the Southern Hemisphere using gas from oil. Under this new method of manufacture, gas for household use is made from crude oil instead of by carbonising coal. The gas-from-oil plant has been producing since December 18, but as a precaution it has been operated in conjunction with the coal-gas plant, and a mixture of the two types of gas has been fed into the mains.—(P.A.)
