Christchurch Drivers

Sir, —With reference to a letter criticising Christchurch drivers, I should like to add my own Comments. As an entirely independent observer, who has spent two months in this country, it is my considered opinion that the worst type of driving is to be seen in the city of Auckland where most motorists—and pedestrians—seem to adopt a “go as you please” attitude. I commented upon this to a taxi-driver who had spent two years in Australia. six months as a transport driver between Sydney and Melbourne, a gruelling test of ability, skill, and endurance. I asked him how long he thought an average Auckland motorist would last in and about Melbourne or Sydney. This answer was. “Five minutes—then he’d be either in gaol, hospital or dead!” —Yours. etc., MARGARET ARMSTRONG. January 8. 1958.
