MRS M. BETHELL HONOURED
Service To Red Cross
Mrs Marmaduke Betbell, who was awarded the Councillor of Honour badge ot the New Zealand Red Cross Society last October, was recently honoured by members of the Culverden Red Cross sub-centre. The founder of this sub-centre. Mrs Bethell has been its president sine# she formed it ih 1915. She was also a member of the North Canterbury Centre of the Society for many years. The award is the highest the New Zealand Red Cross can bestow.
Past and present members of the Red Cross Society from Waiau, Hanmer Springs, Waikari, Hawarden and Christchurch sub-centres attended the function.
The secretary of the Culverden sub-centre (Mrs F. Christopher) paid a tribute to Mrs Bethel's outstanding service to the society during the last 42 years. Mrs H. Dampier-Crossley, one of the original voluntary aids in Amuri who has worked in close association with Mrs Bethell, gave an outline of Red Cross activities in the early days of the organisation. She presented Mrs Bethell with a vase and flowers on behalf of the district
Mrs Bethell pinned shoulder sprays on to Mesdames Morse. Dampier-Crossley, G. Mathias, P. Pickering, J. Stratton, Christopher and Miss E. Travis. Mr C Buchanan (Christchurch), who was awarded the Councillor of Honour badge at the same time as Mrs Bethell, was presented 'with a button-hole.
As a souvenir .for Mrs Bethell, a visitors’ book was autographed by all present
