POST-SECTION PLAY TODAY AT BOWLING TOURNAMENT

Qualifiers Found After Eight Rounds

An exodus of more than 500 visiting- bowlers will begin from Christchurch this morning as those players eliminated from the final rounds of the singles, pain, and fours at the national bowling tournament make their way home. The departures wiU continue until Tuesday or Wednesday of next week, by which time the title-winners will be known. Few will have pleasant memories of Christchurch weather.

With several fours resting on their laurels with six wins to their credit, while others with four and five wins strove vigorously to gain their sixth and qualify for post-section play, yesterday’s games were full of incident. Almost all of the favoured teams will enter post-section play in the fours, which begins today, apart from some notable absentees is W. H. Hampton (Nae Nae), A. C. Snaddon (Taita), E. H. Ravenwood (North-east Valley), and P. C. Skogiund (Northern, Palmerston North.)

Among the seventeen tours which went through the qualifying rounds unbeaten were those skipped by J. H. Rabone (Auckland), singles winner in 1955; J. Pirret Jun. (Tuakau), the singles champion last year; J. Walker (Onehunga). who leads a very strong team which includes the national title winners F. Livingstone and J. Macklow; W. L. Grace (Rawhiti); J. D. Crisp (Temuka); J. R- Lamason (Wellington), the former New Zealand cricketer, and J. J. Doyle (Runanga). Nine are from the South Island and eight from- the North IslandThree local teams have done very well to win all their games —those skipped by H. Deavoll (Belfast), F. B. Hickman (Sydenham). and D. G. Edward (Spreydon).

The weather yesterday was again unkind, and a cold southwesterly made conditions tricky on many greens. Light rain fell for short periods during the day. but it was riot long enough to affect the draw and run of the greens. The post section rounds of the fours wiU begin today, as well as concluding rounds in the singles and pairs as players become available. Several fours competing yesterday bad already been eliminated, but tho did not lose heart and continued to play the game to the best of their ability. On several occasions, it was these fours which managed to stop others fyom qualifying. i

Skegland Defeated Although the pressure was off for T. T. Skoglund’s formidable Carlton team, the Elmwood four, skipped by D. R. McDonald, did well to inflict the first defeat upon the Auckland four. Skogiund had already won six gamta and qualified. whereas McDonald had been eliminated with three previous losses. It was McDonald himself who can take credit for the team’s win, and his drawing throughout was deserving of the result. A game which was played with nothing at stake and brought some fine bowling was seen when Skoglund’s four met . the holder of several Christchurch titles. M. Yugovich (Beckenham). Both teams had won six of their seven games and had qualified, and care was cast to the winds in this meeting. While other members of the teams had their moments, it was Skogiund and Yugovich who stole the day. Yugovich, in particulm. played some delightful draw shots on either hand, while Skogiund frequently fen beck on driving to bum the heads when the advantage was lost Yugovich won 20-11-in an earlier game, Yugovich had directed his team well to score a comfortable 38-18 win over E. H. Taylor (Phoenix) Trading 17-6 by the tenth head, Yugovich held a good margin for th° r°«t of the game.

M. J. Squire (West End. Taranaki) required the last game of the section play in the fours to qualify- He met R. C. Gosden (South Brighton), who had only three wins. Gosden had the edge on Squire in the early stages oi the game, but the four-times title winner did not appear at all ruffled when he was M-6 down on the fourteenth bead. The South Brighton four completely outplayed the Taranaki four on long heads. On the sixteenth head Taranaki held shot and over the next four heads they added another eight to be two down on the board. On the next head the South Brighton three drew the shot, but J. Lobb, the West End three, turned it back for five shots. Squire drew the sixth, but Godsen played a great bowl to save five and still be in the lead by one.

The South Brighton four seemed all at sea on the short heads and Taranaki kept on piling on the points to lead 24-16 on the twentysecond head.

Lobb saved the last head when Gosden was holding three shots. He drew inside and although Gosden tried desperately to turn out the shot bowl he just missed Squire disturbed the head to give Gosden one, which ended the game, 24-21. in Taranaki’s favour.

W. H. Hampton (Nae Nae) failed to qualify for post section play when play commenced m the morning. Hampton required to win both his games to qualify In his first game he met E. F Chivers (Mona Vale) with five wins. In this game Hampton led 10-2 on the tenth head and -was in full command of the game up to the twenty-second head when he led, 20-13. On the next bead Chivers took two shots and on the twenty-fourth when the skips left-the bead, Chivers was bold--SS. Hampton had a dmeult heed to pHiy into, but with an excellent shot be saved four. On the last head Hampton was leadin* <2O-17 and seemed certain of victory, but th» Mnwi Vale tour rose to the occasion and drew four shots to win a most exciting game. 21-20. imarewtve BewUag —°” ?*** ,wo Beckenham greens

skipped by A. C. Kirkham also goes on to post-section play with eight wins. Continuing its impressive display of earlier in the week, the team beat V. Armstrong (Shirley), 26-19, and went on to bring P. D. O’Connor (Canterbury) to the end of his unbeaten record, 24-10. In his morning game. O’Connor had only just managed to beat J. C. Neill (Oamaru R.S.A.), 22-20.

E. P. Exelby (Frankton Junction), a previous pairs title winner, only J just managed to qualify by winning ' both his games yesterday. In his ' first game against F. Tomlinson 1 (Elmwood), things looked bad after * the seventeenth end, when he was 1 down 18-12. Playing the high-class < game of which he is capable, Exelby ' fought back to be 18-18 on the < twentieth. Tomlinson did not score I again, while Exelby piled on another 12 points, to win 30-18. 1 The Timaru Magistrate, E. A. Lee. ; also managed to reach post-section play when he won his sixth match. J against H. A. Barnett (Cust), 34-17. The Maxiborough skip, H. Todd, who is exceeding all expectations,, also qualified yesterday, as well as , remaining in the singles and pairs ■ He beat F. Ullrich (Shirley), 46-18. . in one of the highest scores of the day, and then beat C. R. Goodhew < (Avon). 29-21. Exciting Game i One of the most interesting games of the afternoon was seen at Elm- < wood, where one four which had i won five games and required their sixth win to qualify, met in a long, serious engagement with a team al- I ready eliminated. A. B. Pearson’s : Cromwell team and R. A. Scott’s 1 Rangiora four were the contestants i They were 18-all on the twentythird, head. Scott gained one on the next head to lead 20-19, and left Pearson with the task of scoring two for a win on the last head. Pearson was able to hold three on the head when Scott came to his Last bowl. Scott had to try to rest toe kitty from the Cromwell bowls or burn the head, and he decided . on toe latttfe His drive misted with tne game almost in his grasp, and Pearson sighed with relief at having qualified for post-section play. R. E. -Pilkington (Balmoral) only attar a .-. olage struggle in his second atabat W- Rust Down 742 ifter 12 ends, he recovered to wto 25-21. Beeveß Unbeaten At the Barrington green, an exciting game developed in the morning between the two six-game • winners, W. Deavoll and the widely-renowned C. H. Kinzett (Maitai). Full marks must go to Deavoll for clever skipping of a team which could well cause a major upset in the final rounds today and on Saturday, G. A. Crowley (Gisborne), a double title-winner, met E. Stickle (Dallington) with four wins. The master hand of Crowley came through to win. 29-14, and qualify. Barren Eliminated T. W. J. Barron (Miramar), one of Wellington’s nominees for the next Empire Games, was eliminated i He required his last two games to qualify and in his first he beat ■ JbgC. Hay (Cashmere), 29-23. Requiring to win his last game be just ? ailed to go on to post section play by doe point through losing this game to F. W. Mercer (Christchurch R.S A ). A. L. ■ Taylor (Christchurch) bad five wins, when play commenced yesterday and in his first game he met W. P. O’Neil) (Carlton). Taylor won, 38-22. after an uphill battie over the early stages of the game.
