TOURNEY FOR JUNIORS

Finalists To Meet Today

The top seeded players, all members of a New Zealand Lawn Tennis Association sponsored touring party, will contest the finals of the under IP single* sections of the Canterbury junior championships today. Davidson (North Otago) will meet G. Moss (Canterbury) in the boys’ final and Misses M. Johnston (Wel--1 ngton) and M. Hatton (Auckland) will play off in the girls’ final. These players all moved through the five rounds, in which each player met every other, unbeaten, and they won most of their matches fairly comfortably. Miss Hatton had the most difficult road to the final because she was taken to three sets by Miss Denise Souter, of Timaru, on Wednesday, and she won, 8-6, in the second set . against Miss C. Smith, of Rangiora, in the fifth round yesterday. Points in the sections were:— Boys.—Section A: G. Davidson 4, D. Preston 2, A. Fenson 2, B. Leopold 2, J. Francis 0. Section B: G, Moss 5, R. Payne 4, L. Kane 3, V. Jensen 1,1. Ogier 1, R. Fuller

Girls.—Section A: M. Johnston 4, Diane Souter 3, H. Rich 2, M. Shekleton 1, E. Parris 0. Section B: M. Hatton 5, C. Smith 3, Denise Souter 3, B. Stack 1, H. Lord 1, H. Mahy 1. Those in the A sections played one fewer matches than those in the B sections because of byes. Under 17 Singles The top seeded players, B. Judge and B. Lane, will contest the final of the under 17 boys’ singles and Misses L. Marsdon and J. Andrews (Ashburton) will play for the girls’ title. They were first and second seeded respectively. An upset was caused in the under 17 girls’ doubles yesterday when Misses J. Cusdin (Banks Peninsula), aged 15, and E. Ogilvie (Greymouth), aged 13, eliminated the top seeded pair, Misses J. Hatch and L. Mardon, winning 6-3, 7-9, 6-1. Misses Cusdin and Ogilvie, who had not played together before, were paired by the tournament administrators and they have proved a good combination with Miss Cusdin, a fine smasher and driver, and Miss Ogilvie, an accurate Jobber. The Canterbury pair stayed most of the time ori the baseline. They later won a semi-final to enter the final.

Miss Hatton took the first set, 6-1, from Miss Smith although several of the games went to deuce. Then, in the second set. Miss Smith put up very determined opposition which almost got her the set. She served well, especially into Miss Hatton’s backhand corner and she made some successful sorties to the net, but generally she lacked the experience and confidence of the Auckland player. Miss Hatton’s cross-court backhand served her just as well as it has throughout the tournament and she was full of aggression. Miss Johnston beat the Canterbury - women’s champion, Miss Diane Souter, 6-3, 6-4, mainly because of her fine all-court game, with which even Miss Souter’s strong driving could not cope. Yesterday’s matches were played in unpleasant conditions with a cold wind and occasional spots of rain. Results:— BOYS’ EVENTS Under 19 Singles A SECTION Fifth Round.—D. Preston beat J.
