As the largest business organisation in the Dominion, the New Zealand Railways offers outstanding opportunities for career openings in many fields embracing about 250 different occupations, trades and professions. It is a service in which there is a fixed retiring age, so that, although the staff totals more than 25.000, vacancies are always occurring. There are excellent superannuation provisions on retirement and plans are under way for a first class welfare scheme for alf employees of the department. In the clerical branch, which includes the train control and running staff, the intake of new

employees has been low since 1930 and the prospects of those

who join the department now are good for quick advancement for the right cadets. Ordinary promotion will earn a man a salary of £B5O after 11 years’ service. In the Canterbury and West Coast district traffic branch there are 360 employees. Of these 61 earn £9OO or more. Lodging allowances are paid to cadets who ere required to live away from their, homes.
