Salaries And Allowances
Commencing salaries for postprimary teachers with an M.A. degree who have had three years of full time study at university and one year at a teachers’ college are £685 for men, and £615 for women. To this can be added a qualification allowance of £2O or £3O, and, where applicable, a marriage allowance of £62 10s.
Salary increases are automatic until £995 has been reached for men, and £915 for women, exclusive of marriage or qualification allowance, with the sole re-
servation that the teacher has served in a "country service” position. Further increases to £ll4O and £1065 respectively are semiautomatic, while male assistants carrying special responsibility may reach £1365 plus marriage and qualification allowances. Senior women assistants carrying similar responsibilities may reach £ 1295 plus qualification allowance. At the top end of the scale a principal can reach a maximum salary of almost £l9OO a year.
