TROTTING W. R. Butt May Win Double At Timaru

The Templeton trainer, W. R. Butt, looks to have bright prospects of winning the. John Hole Memorial Handicap and the Pareora Handicap, the doubles races on the first day of the Timaru Trotting Club’s summer meeting at Washdyke tomorrow.

Butt has Guard’s Brigade, unbeaten in three starts this season, engaged in -the first leg. and Mayneen, undefeated in her two appearances to date, in the secund leg. Butt also has Super Cloud. Dark Valley, Jbhnny Hall. Reticent and Seafield Lad engaged at the mFI-ting All have sound recent form to their credit and Butt should have a most mcceasful day.

Guard's Brigade has won twice ever two miles this season and in none of bis wins has he been extended. He has become most reliable since being trained in Canterbury . and' at his present form it is difficult to imagine him beaten. Johnny Hail win be bracketed with Guard's Brigade. He has raced most consistently this season and is overdue for a win. However, he would be preferred over a shorter distance. Most opposition to Guard's Brigade will probably eosne from Toune and Macklin Tourie was an easy and most impressive winner over two miles at Ashburton on December 28 at his last start. The Gay Piper gelding looks favourably placed on the front, and with a good trail he could easily outsprint Guard’s Brigade.

Macklin is a true stayer. He overcame difficulties to win over two miles at Hew Brighton early last month when he was having his first start for the season. From 24 yards here, he must be given a great chance of taking a prominent part in the finish. Placed at Auckland’'

Night Reveller was a costly pacer at Auckland last month. He finished third in his two races* and on the strength of those efforts he will be solidly supported. Gold Mist. Kyle Nurse and Blue Jay have ad raced well enough J»“s »"■«* to place prospects, but it is expected that the winner will come from among Guard's Brigade, Tourie and Macklin. Mayneen wffl ta in demand in the second leg, apjhueora Handicap. If he begins better tomorrow, be could end Mayneen*. winning run.

Conquistador was a sound fourth on a heavy track at Addington on January 1. The shorter distance is expected to suit him ess&swa-"" 1 " Rndtotron won twice at Greymouth last week-end, his efforts emphasising his Stamina. This

should stand to him again at Washdyke where he will race over one mile and three-quarters and it will not surprise M he is placed. He will be bracketed with Red Arion, a disappointment at Greymouth.

Gey Alabama is more capable I than her recent effort. auggest and I she eould upeet calculations if - she reproduced her best form. Red Antrim, a winner at Gore i last time out, has plenty of ability and be is selected to do best of i the remainder. The Trotters Sonatol, a decisive winner at Ashburton on December 28 when 1 having his first start in New Zealand for almost three years, should not be troubled to win again in the Waimate Handicap, the main ' event on the programme for ' straight-out trotters. Sonatol has 1 a splendid style of trotting, and if he trots as solidly as he did at 1 Ashburton, he should not be troubled to win. 1 Delight raced well at Rangfora ! far a win and a fourth placing. He has become more solid in recent weeks and should soon extend his record. Au Fait is a grand trotter on her day. If she begins sifaoathly, sbe could lead from and .to end. &H is assured of eolld lupport. Kaboon and Marawiti hero the best form of the rest * Super Cloud, Sonatol and Pvp- ■ percorn are favoured for tb) 1 Kingsdown Handicap. Super Cloud has been placed in bls : four starts this season and » win must be close for him. He is a brother to Superway and Supervise and he looks as though he will develop into a high-clam winner later on. Sonatol has to give away starts of 36 yards in this race and he , may have trouble avoiding breaking horses in the first furlong. If he escapes trouble and trots as well as he did when he won at Ashburton, he must be hard to beat Peppercorn had three starts at Greymouth last week-end and he improved with each of them. He is dose to winning form and may be prominent Soprano, a place-getter in her two starts this season, Astrol, Thumberlina and Reflective are others expected to add interest to Hie finish.
