N.Z. BATTALION IN MALAYA
Visit By General Festing

The Commander-in-Chiel, Far East Land Forces (General Sir Francis Festing) visited the Ist Battalion. New Zealand Regiment, at Nyasa Camp, Kota Tinggi, on Tuesday, according to a cablegram received by Army Headquarters in Wellington. After seeing the New Zealanders at work. General Festing said that he was "impressed with their physiques and fitness, and hoped that such fine material would be trained and developed to enable the unit to acquit itself successfully in the face of the difficult opposition ahead.” General Festing. who was accompanied by the Commander of the New Zealand force (Colonel G. P. Cade) saw the activities of every sub-unit in the battalion. A Maori party threw down the traditional challenge and gave several hakas. General Festing shawed great interest in the battalion's Kiwi mascot.
