ADVICE TO DR. FUCHS
‘Not Intended For Publication’ (New Zeaiana Press Association) WELLINGTON, January 8.
The chairman of the Ross Sea Committee (Mr C. M. Bowden) confirmed today-that Sir Edmund Hillary’s recommendation to Dr. Vivian Fuchs that he abandon his trans-Antarctic journey had not been intended for publication.
Mr Bowden said that the message containing details of Sir Edmund Hillary’s advice to Dr. Fuchs and addressed to him as chairman of the Ross Sea Committee, had become mixed up by mistake with a number of press releases. This inadvertently led to its being made public.
Mr Bowden said' tie had not known of the inessage, beforehand.
“It was an unfortunate error in the handling of the message.” he said. The information it contained was confidential.
The London headquarters of the expedition had been informed of the mistake, and had accepted the explanation.
Mr Bowden said the. mistake was unfortunate, but he saw no value in dwelling on it.
