GLIDING TEST
Auckland Girl’s Success "The Press” Special Service AUCKLAND, January 8. After successfully completing her Silver C tests—the gliding equivalent of Air Force wings— Miss R. Thomson, a 17-year-old Aucklander, becomes the first North Island woman to qualify for the award. Miss Thomson passed the tests at the annual camp of the Auckland and Tauranga gliding clubs at Matamata. The camp opened on December 28 and will end on Thursday. Twenty-five Auckland members with six gliders and about 15 members from Tauranga using one machine are taking part. Another 17-year-old to complete his tests is G. Green, of Papatoetoe, who qualified with Miss Thomson on January 2. Others who qualified earlier in the week were J. Menzies, of Manurewa. and J. Boyd, of Papatoetoe. Five other members have completed their tests in the sections either for distance, duration of flight or height. Westerly winds along the Kaimai Range have provided ideal conditions for instruction in ridge soaring, which is one of the main purposes of the camp. This is the fourth year in succession in which the camp has been held at Matamata.
