Short Range To W. J. Burton

(New Zealana Press Association) NEW PLYMOUTH. January 8. W. J. Burton (Gisborne) won the short range event today when the national archery championships were continued at New Plymouth. Late in the afternoon round Burton had to forgo two ends and a sighting end, but in spite of the loss of a possible 108 points finished 32 points ahead of his nearest competitor.

Heavy dew soaked competitors In the flight, which was shot at the New Plymouth aerodrome in the early morning. Apart from the heavy atmosphere a crosswind also troubled competitors. Results:—

RESERVE FUND PROPOSED Archery Association’s Annual Meeting (New Zeatana Press Association) NEW PLYMOUTH, January 8. With accumulated funds of more than £4BO, of which £137 was in cash, the New Zealand Archery Association was in a healthy position, the secretary-treasurer (Mr G. H. Wilson) reported at the annual meeting held in conjunction With the New Zealand championships at New Plymouth last night. Mr Wilson, who was re-elected secretary, but relinquished the treasurership because of pressure of work, suggested that the association could consider setting up a reserve fund to guard against possible deficits on future national championships or on overseas tours by New Zealand archers. At present the association had £5O in its Olympic fund and wodld require at least £lOOO by' 1964, when it was hoped to send a team to the Olympic Games. The council had requested permission to hold the world championships, said the president (Mr T. H. Wood) in his report. New Zealand archers had also been invited to Moscow to take part in an international sports meeting. Officers, all of whom live in Auckland, are:— President, Mr Wood; vice-presi-dents, Messrs W. W. Mitchener and J. W. Hinchco; secretary, Mr Wilson; treasurer, Mr S. Trubshaw; council, Messrs J. Richards, P. Boland. K. Leyman, O. Holland, T. W. Harriman, J. Kerr, and A. Mouldey. WOMEN’S CRICKET TOURNAMENT Wins For Canterbury And Auckland New Zeaiana Press Association> DUNEDIN, January «7. Drizzle delayed play in the women’s national cricket tournament at Logan Park today until 1.45 p.m. in the Wellington-Canterbury match, and to 2 p.m. in the Auckland-Otago match. Time did not permit an outright decision in either match, so Canterbury and Auckland each obtained points for a win on the first innings.

Batting honours for the day’s play went to the Wellington captain (I Lamason), with an unbeaten 55 Other good scores were by J. McAuley (Wellington) 38, M. Speight (Otago) 36. and E. Paton (Otago) 34. Some excellent bowling averages were obtained. M. Taylor (Auckland! took four for 18. P. Blackler (Canterbury) three for 21 and R. McKenzie (Auckland) three for 15.

Tomorrow is free for the players, and on Thursday Auckland will begin itb match against Wellington and Otago' will play Canterbury.
