FOURS CONTINUED AT N.Z. BOWLING TOURNAMENT

Greens Faster With Bright Sunshine

A magistrate, a minister of religion, and a inperintendent of police all lost games in the third day’s play of the fours at the national bowling championships in Christchurch yesterdav. These skips were E. A. Lee (Timaru), W. Heerdegen (Rangiora) and D, R. Sugrue (Edgeware). Lee lost his first game against W. N. Cousins (Taieri); Heerdegen was eliminated from post-section play with his third loss, to W. E. Jelley (Cromwell); and Sugrue, winner of his first four games, was defeated in his two games against L. Newton (Dallington) and H. Carter (Mornington).

After a week of slow greens, yesterday’s surfaces were lightning fast. Bright sunshine made the surface extremely hard by the afternoon, and a very wide draw was required on most greens. The top-class players were really in their element, and some very high scores were established over teams which, on the heavier greens of the last week, would have probably fared better. If the weather holds good again today, it seems likely that the favoured fours, especially those from the North Island, will make up for their losses on the heavy greens on Monday and Tuesday.

Thirty fours remained unbeaten at the end of yesterday’s play.

The draw on some greens yes- c lerday was very large. Fre- s piently bowls had to be re- J limed because they became < nixed with bowls on an adjacent < ink, and when a long head and i ihort head were being played i imultaneously collisions between i »wls often occurred. At St. i fartins, the draw was particu- ; arly large, and as much as one 1 ink and a half were needed on ; ong heads. j The Timaru Magistrate, E. A. Lee, had his successes brought to i halt when he met a strong : Faieri team led by W. N. Cousins. Down 12-14 after 17 ads, Lee played a fine draw shot rith his last on the next end to . ike an opposing bowl from the □tty and rest there with his own. ■his was the last scoring shot of he Timaru four for some time, md the final score of 25-17 was i fitting reward for good play 7 the Taieri team. C. R. Goodlew (Avon) was no match for Lee a his second game, and was delated 31-15. Ministers Beaten Two ministers of religion are laying in the tournament—the ev. W. Heerdegen, vicar of angiora, and recently appointed Wellington City Missioner, and le Rev. Father J. P. Hally • Jmakau). Hally’s team was liminated on Tuesday from post- ' ction play, but it was only in ie of the most exciting games esterday that Heerdegen’s team • its third match and also : ie chances of taking part in postBction play. After a good win over the 1 lataitai team skipped by W. M. i ing, 39-9, the Rangiora four rand their match against the Iromwell team skipped by W. E. : elly. After a slow start, the langiora team drew level 18-18 fter the 18th head. Heerdegen ook one on the next to draw head, but Jelly drew the shot o equalise on the 20th. Jelly ook four off the next end when leerdegen missed with drives, nd one more off the 22nd. The langiora four rallied to take a wo from the next, but it was too ate. With Jelly lying four up, leerdegen drew a good bowl o save three and make the score 9-24. The last head was widely cattered. Needing a six to win, the langiora four tried gallantly but gain Jelly took one from the ead to win 25-19. The Superintendent of Police a Christchurch. D R. Sugrue Edgeware), lost to the Dallington our skipped by L. Newton, 27-14. his was the Edgeware team’s irst loss, and they showed little f their good play of the previous wo days. In the afternoon game ' he Edgeware four was again on ’ he wrong side of the ledger, nd although they made a gallant - ally towards the end of the game, , rent down 31-22 against H ; -arter’s Mornington four. After ifteen ends Carter led, 26-6, and . n a finishing run, Sugrue added '6 points to his opponents’ 5. Among prominent skips to compete the day with their run of uccesses unbroken are J. Pirret *un. (Tuakau), M. A. Marinavich Gratia), E. H. Elwood (Christjurch R.S.A.), J. D. Crisp Temuka), C. H. Kinzett ■Maitai), T. T. Skoglund (Carlon), W. P. O’Neill (Carlton), W. Grace (Rawhiti), and E. A. ' "arnes (Greymouth). Pilkington Loses The strong Balmoral team skip'ed by R. E. Pilkington also had . Is first loss yesterday. J. Scott’s • *reen Island team had a hard ’ght and won by a slender margin « one point, 28-27. k?- was an unusual situation for nlkington to find himself 18-1 J town after eight heads, and down I*6 after thirteen. The clever Jneralship and masterly play of Tlkington and his third, N. >ran ge, was responsible for the . ‘ earn staging a seemingly impos’ble recovery to be up 22-21 after J e 18th. This was the result “ a three, a four, a seven, and singles. Scott drew level n the 19th, and Pilkington took wo on the next two heads to “ ead 24-22. ’ Was a one an d a th ree on toe next two ends to Scott which brtually won the Green Island the game. Up 26-24, they *ere clearly upsetting the Bal- ; noral team in this marathon ‘ Pilkington, again the, > * er situation, gave his ; advantage when he drew 5 ?h tllre e on the 24th. But s P l , the tenacious Scott held on ® his hard-won position, and a *. g e on the 25th made the tie. .Scott won the toss and elected ' 0 have the last bowl. Scott’s , gained the shot bowl, but all ’ other bowls were scattered the skips took the mat. J.h’y in g to rest the shot bowl. 1 failed to connect any in the head, and with his shot he missed with his drive * a fraction. Scott won a ■eniorable game, 28-27. ' A four which has deserved its - to 6BB is D Crisp’s Temuka , Yesterday they retained. eir unbeaten record with two

outstanding victories against the strong Linwood team skipped by S. J. Snedden and H. G. Dailey (Shirley). The game with Snedden was another marathon—it did not finish until 1.40 p.m.. whereas most games were completed by midday. Crisp is a beautifully smooth draw player, and given able support from his other three, must be regarded favourably for successes in post-section play.

Disappointing Display Another surprise was the elimination of E. H. Ravenwood (North-east Valley) from post-sec-tion play. He lost to S. Ewing (Balmoral) 22-15, and at no stage did the Dunedin four deserve to take the lead. L. J. Hughes led very well for Ravenwood, but his was an uphill fight with little support from his team-mates. Ravenwood was definitely off form, and it is disappointing to see such a fine player who has represented New Zealand overseas go through the tournament without reaching the final rounds.

Four extra heads had to be played before L. W. Barwell (Linwood) was able to defeat T. W. J. Barron (Miramar) in a sensational finish. Each time the Miramar four were to. advantage on the extra head. Barwell, playing a fine skip’s game, burnt the end. The game began as sensationally as it finished when Barwell got a seven off the first end and Barron gained a six off the second.

The finish was a fittting climax. With Barron lying two up on the head, Earwell made no mistake and drove the kitty to the ditch to be three up, and win 28-25.

The Christchurch R.S.A. team skipped by E. H. Elwood is playing excellent bowls, although in its final game yesterday, it was faced with the chance of defeat until the last head. In the morning Elwood beat P. G. Morrison (Papanui), 34-17, and in the afternoon met D. Hessey (Auckland R.S.A.).

Hessey directed his team well to be 20-15 up at the eighteenth, but in a desperate flourish, the local team drew level 20-20 on the twenty-first head. Hessey did not score again. Elwood winning, 28-20.

A member of the Canterbury club who has six wins to his credit and whose team is playing very well is H. G. Ledgard. Together with Elwood, he is one. of several local fours which will enter post-section rounds. A real surprise was the defeat of the formidable Gisborne team skipped by the double title-winner G. A. Crowley, formerly of Tolaga Bay. Crowley was in fine form to beat E. Mitchell (Tahunanui). 24-18 in the morning, but in the afternoon D. Vaughan (Opawa) turned the tables to win 21-19. Crowley’s team of W. J. Langlands, G. H Brittenden and E. H. Crowley played well, but the Opawa bowlers seemed to have all struck form at once Close Finish S. Ozich (Henderson), skip of a team which completed the first two days without a loss, had a very close finish with V. V. Gallagher (United) before Ozich was beaten, 24-23. From the first end. when Gallagher began confidently with a five, the United four excelled themselves. Trailing 14-1 after 12 heads, Ozich fought back to be only three down after the twenty-fourth. As he received little support from his team-mates the recovery was a fine one, and by gaining a three on the twenty-fifth, the Henderson team were able to call for the extra head. Ozich failed to draw the winning shot and lost by one point. The strong Onehunga four, skipped bv T. Walker, which includes two nrevious national title winners. J Macklow and F. Livingstone, are showing great form, and have played very exacting bowls throughout the fours. They have won all their six games, and have now qualified tor post-section play. Macklow has been a tower of strength to this team, and his leading has played a major part in their successes. A most interesting game was seen between G. N. Boulton (Wanganui) the manager of the Empire Games team to Cardiff, and H. W. Brown (Grevmouth). Boulton went away in grand style, and on the thirteenth head was leading the Grevmouth four 23-9. but for, the next nme heads they were unable to score a point. Over these heads the Greymouth four took 16 points to lead ?5-23 A three on the next head to Boulton was a great relief, but two singles on the last two headeave the Greymouth team the win While the Greymouth four were in command, the Wanganui team were under great pressure, and in trying too hard to plav the shot required, they failed badly

Runanga Four s Loss F White (Runanga), the skip ot the winning four in 1946, won all hfe fou? games on the firet wo days hut vesterday in his first game against K H. Batt (Shannon) he went down 23-18. White held the lead up to the seventeenth head when the score was 17-13 From thpn nn his run was halted and Batt over t he next five heads took me SnM and scored four to White s single. White in his next game up to the. nineteenth head held the lead over T O Chinnery (Edgeware) when the score was 19-13. and here as in his previous head the Runanga again slumped, and for the next I Bye heads did not score. Over these heads Chinnery added anotl l er w n ' n 4 points to take the lead 22"^ad W but took a single on the last head, but

.ost 22-21. It he is to qualify he will have to win both his games today.

A. Westfield (Balmacewan) in the fifth round held J. Rabone (Auckland) to the fifteenth head, when he led 12-11. Over the next six heads Rabone scored six to Westfield’s two and went into the lead 17-14. On the twenty-first head Westfield was holding shot on the head and with his first bowl drew a second, but with his last bowl he changed his hand and played to a head full of danger. His draw was well off its mark and he held the two shots.

Westfield showed great lack of leadership over the concluding heads by changing the hands of his three when he had drawn well on the other hand.

A game where excellent drawing was seen was between M. J. Reardon (Takahanga) and E. Williamson (Shirley). Both these fours delighted the spectators and apart from the interest shown in the Onehunga four’s game, this one was the best of the morning’s play on the Edgeware green. No quarter was given and on the twenty-second head the score was level, 19-19. Over the next three heads the Shirley four managed to take three shots to Reardon’s one, and won 22-20. Borich Wins Spectators crowded round the end of the rink at the Linwood green, where M. G. Borich (Hamilton) was playing J. L. Barriball (Fendalton). Borich caused much amusement when he termed Barriball’s wooden bowls “Bob Semple’s steam rollers.’’ Although the Fendalton four led the Hamilton players in the early stages, they after about 12 heads started to fall well back, and were soundly beaten. In his morning game Borich beat A. Soster (Runanga), 2621. E. P. Exelby (Frankton Junction), who suffered two losses in the first two days, had a very convincing win yesterday over H. E. Geary »(Cobden), 27-10. Exelby and his team played excellent bowls throughout the game, and the fast, full-drawing green was much to their liking. Exelby in his next game met V. Armstrong (Shirley) and here there was a great rivalry, for in 1947, when leading for H. B. Kay, Armstrong met Exelby in the final of the pairs at Wellington. As at Wellington, Exelby was always the master, winning 38-9. The Dallington four skipped by E. Stickle, which caused a major upset by beating W. H. Hampton’s Nae Nae team on Tuesday, had a good win over C. Madsen’s Cashmere team, 31-18, in .the morning. The strong Balmoral team, skipped by R. J. Murray, defeated the Dallington four in the afternoon, but only, after a thrilling game with a final score of 21-20.

A team highly-favoured to reach the final rounds, T. T. Skoglund’s Carlton four, again won both matches. With six wins in six games, all of which have been most convincing, they must contest post-sec-tion play. Yesterday they beat R. M. Liddell’s Mornington four, 23-18, and had a runaway win over R. K. Kinzett (Spreydon), 44-12. Another Carlton team, skipped by W. P. O’Neill, is also unbeaten. In the morning game against J. Leggett’s North-east Valley team they were hard pressed, but in the afternoon they beat F. R. King’s Barrington four easily, 25-9. E. A. Warnes and his Greymouth team are playing particularly good bowls, and if their form continues, will be hard to beat in the concluding rounds. They have not lost a game to date.

Those bowlers still remaining in the pairs and singles who have not qualified for post-section play in the fours will begin their matches on Friday. The greens on which they are to play will be allocated by the tournament committee at headquarters at the United green at 8.30 a.in.
