RACING Riccarton Horses Win Reefton Club Double

“The Press" Special Service

GREYMOUTH, January 8.

The double at the Reefton Jockey Club’s meeting today was won by two Riccarton-trained horses, Bon Salut and Lucky Sal, and the dividend returned to their supporters was £24 Os 6d. Both horses won easily and both were ridden by the Riccarton jockey, A. J. Stokes.

Stokes was in great form, and rode four winners. Another feature of the day’s racing was the dual success of Whiohau, also from Christchurch. Bon Salut and Whiohau are both trained by N. H. McDonald, who owns the former and races Whiohau in partnership with E. J. Critchley. Racing took place in hot weather and the track was fast, as was indicated by the time of Imin 26sec registered by Lucky Sal in winning the New Year Handicap. Whiohau was not extended to win the Crushington Hack Handicap, but with a 71b penalty over a longer distance he was lucky to beat Seascrape which was boxed in twice then just failed to catch Whiohau.

Bon Salut was untroubled to win the Mawheraiti Handicap, the first leg of the double. Stokes always had him handy to the leaders. Skyrain, Direct Passage and Arabian Stream.

Bon Salut ranged up alongside the leader, Arabian Stream, at the home bend and once in line for the judge he left the others to it, winning easily by two lengths. Arabian Stream faded badly in the straight and was passed by Jack’s Folly and Heathcliffe, both of which made up ground over the last furlong. Second Leg

Big Ben was badly left at the start of the second leg, and Tonka. Beau Revere and Lucky Sal led past the stand. Lucky Sal made a forward move going along the back, and at the four-furlong post was just behind Tonka, with Beau Revere, Appreciate and Chellene next. Tonka was still in charge at the turn into the straight, but Lucky Sal won easily Appreciate finished on better than Beau Revere for third.

The New Brighton pacer, Cruising Dell, won both light harness events with a great deal in reserve. The totalisator on-course handled £16,636 10s, including £lB9B 10s on the double. Results:—
