PLANS FOR N.Z. INDUSTRY
Mr Holloway Visits Auckland
(New Zealand Pres» Assodattonl AUCKLAND, January 8.
There was no suggestion that the Government would encourage unrealisic ,' nd uneconomic industry, said the Minister of Industries and Commerce (Mr P. N. Holloway) when he arrived in Auckland today to meet the council of the Auckland Manufacturers’ Association and Auckland members of Parliament to discuss the effects on manufacturers of the Government’s exchange allocation and import licensing policy.
“We will not be helping the get-rich-quick boys,” he said. The Government, he said, wanted to build up industry which could stand on its own feet when and if import restrictions were eased.
The Government is asking manufacturers to set up groups which can work in co-operation with Department of Industries and Commerce officers. The woollen industry has already set up such a group, and the heavy and light metal industries will soon do so. Eventually, it is expected that all industrial sections will have their groups. Through them the Government will have first-hand information on industry, and with that information it will be able to gear industry in general to improved production .at reduced cost.
