TOURNEY FOR JUNIORS

Second Day At Wilding Park

Two girls and three boys remained unbeaten in the under 19 singles section of the Canterbury junior lawn tennis championships after yesterday’s play at Wilding Park. Boys’ and girls’ singles fields are divided into A and B sections ahd those with the most wins in each will play off in the final on Friday. Top seeded for the bpys* singles, G. Davidson, of North Otago, has won his four matches and has a bye in the fifth round today. In the other section G. Moss (Canterbury) is unbeaten but he has one more match to play—against V. Jensen, who has not yet won. Two players in the A section of the girls’ singles—Misses M. Johnston (Wellington) and Diane Souter (Timaru), the Canterbury womens’ champion—are unbeaten and they will meet in the fifth round today. Miss M. Hatton, of Auckland, is the only player without loss in the B section but she will meet Miss C. Smith (Canterbury), who has had only one loss, in the fifth round. Miss Hatton Wins

Most interesting match of the tournament so far was played between Misses Hatton and Denise Souter in the fourth round and neither had lost at that stage. The match was a hard battl- with fluctuating advantages before Miss Hatton won, 4-6, 6-8, 9-7. Miss Hatton produced some fine shots when she was on the attack but her aggressiveness was limited by Miss Souter’s ability to return almost everything. The Auckland player won points with some swift drives and well-place<f volleys but when she intersperses these with periods of overhitting,’ Miss Souter was able to recover. Miss Souter found most difficulty in returning shots that kicked high for she often cramped them and hit into the net.

The third set was an enthralling one in which Miss Souter went to a 3-1 lead early but lost it to 3-4, and 3-51 Scores were level at 5-5, 6-6 and 7-7, and although she seemed to be gaining superiority, Miss Hatton had plenty of difficulty before she won, 9-7. Miss Johnston had a bye in the third round and won her fourth round match against Miss E. Parris, without the loss of a game. Her all-round attack and pace were too strong for her opponent. Davidson lost only one game in his two matches yesterday. A. Fenson, of the West Coast took that game but he could not cope with Davidson’s service and net play.

The four seeded players, B. Judge, B, Lane. L. Walpole and P. Muxlow have come, through to the semi-finals of the under 17 boys’ singles. Judge was extended in the second set of his match with A. Knight, which he won 6-1, 7-5. He lost points with service errors from a laboured action but the rest of his play was generally sound. BOYS’ EVENTS Under 19 Singles SECTION A Third Round.—G.
