AUSTRALIAN FOOD SUPPLIES
Market Predicted For N.Z. Produce
(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, January 7. New Zealand and Tasmania would become the larders for Australia, said the retiring New Zealand High Commissioner for Australia (Mr G. E. Lisle Aiderton) in Auckland today. A great deal of New Zealand’s foodstuffs would go to Australia within the next 20 years, he said because Australia would not be able to maintain a sufficient food supply for her increasing industrial population.largely because of the vagaries of her climate. Mr Aiderton. who arrived at Auckland today, is to report to the Government on trade development and relations between New Zealand and Australia.
“I will have plenty to say later once my obligations to the Government are fulfilled,” he said. Mr Aiderton added that he did not agree with the Australian contention that it had carried out
its obligations with New Zealand after the trade agreement was reached between the Australian Prime Minister (Mr Menzies) and Sir Sidney Holland. There were still many openings for New Zealand exports to Australia if permits were granted, he said.
Mr Aiderton refused to give further details until his talks with the Prime Minister (Mr Nash).
He said that vigorous tourist promotion was carried out in Australia. This was of interest to New Zealand, as anything that Australia did in that field was of direct benefit to New Zealand.
which had everything Australia had in a much more attractive form.
