ATOM-POWER SEAPLANE
Plans Discussed In US.
(Rec. 9 p.m.) WASHINGTON, January 6.
Admiral Arleigh Burke. Chief of United States Naval Operations, said today that the Navy hoped to put an atomic-powered flying-boat into the air in 'the next few years.
He said the Navy had asked for money for the project and was going ahead. Admiral Burke said the plane would be designed to track down and kill enemy submarines. It would be of fairly low speed, he said, but of tremendous endurance.
“I for one think we can get it to the testing stage in the next couple of years.” Admiral Burke said in an address to the National Press Club. At the same time the Navy Department officially confirmed that the giant British flying-boat, the Princess, built by Saunders Roe. was among the machines being considered as suitable for the firsi nuclear-powered aircraft. The Princess, a huge 10-engined aircraft, is at present in mothballs. A Navy spokesman told Reuter that the Navy has plans for a nuclear powered turbo-prop seaplane.
Soekarno Arrives In India
NEW DELHI. January 6.
President Soekarno of Indonesia arrived in Calcutta by air today from Jakarta on the first leg of six weeks* tour of six nations. The Indian President (Dr. Rajendra Prasad) and the Prime Minister (Mr Nehru) will welcome President Soekarno when he arrives in New Delhi tomorrow He will also visit Egypt, Pakistan. Burma. Thailand and Japan The Foreign Minister (Dr. Suband’io) is accompanying the President.
