QUEEN MOTHER’S VISIT
Holiday For School
Children
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, January 7.
Every school child, primary and post-primary, in New Zealand, will be given a holiday to mark the visit of the Queen Mother to New Zealand. The Government’s decision was announced by the Minister of Education (Mr P. O. Skoglund), today.
Mr Skoglund said that in centres visited by the Queen Mother, education boards and post-primary school boards would be asked to arrange with local authorities that all children in the schools in the area should participate officially in open-air functions and line the route. The remainder of the day would be a holiday for these children. Children in all other schools in New Zealand would be given a full holiday on the day that the Queen Mother visited their nearest centre. The Minister said that this would give an opportunity for the parents to take their children to see Her Majesty. No authority was being given for school buses to convey children to the centres, as it was felt that such a decision would give an advantage to those pupils who normally travelled by school bus and cause some disappointment to those who did not.
