Company News COLA-KIST, LTD.

Demand Exceeds Expectation

A recent development in the soft-drink field in Christchurch has been the marketing of an American-type beverage, made locally under licence to the Auckland proprietors. Thia product has come on the local market a few months before production of another American-type drink is scheduled to begin in Christchurch.

The new company is Cola-Kist Company (Canterbury), Ltd., which has been formed by two well-known Christchurch softdrink manufacturing companies. Quill Morris. Ltd., and W. J. Cowles and Son. Ltd. A director of the new company, Mr W. J. Cowles, said that the volume of business had been five times greater than his most optimistic expectations. The demand for the product had been so great, he said, that the company had had to have the extract flown down from Auckland. The new company, which was registered in Christchurch on December 18. has a nominal capital of £lO,OOO. The directors are Messrs W. V. Cowles (chairman), W. H. Nicholls, J. Bourne, C. Taylor, and W. J. Cowles. The drink is being bottled at the factory of W. J. Cowles and Son, Ltd., until the new company is able to open its own factory. This will be done as quickly as possible, according to Mr Cowles, and the new factory will probably be in operation within six months.

Cola-Kist, described by Mr Cowles as an “American-type drink.” was developed in the North Island. Cola-Kist Company (Canterbury), Ltd., has acquired the South Island franchise. On June 20 the Southern Bottling Company, Ltd., a subsidiary of Ballins Breweries (N.Z.), Ltd., was registered in Christchurch.

This company, which has acquired a factory in Sydenham, was formed to bottle Coca-Cola for distribution in the South Island. It is understood that this company will not commence production until March.

FEILDING SHEEP SALES

South Island Well Represented *The Press* Special Service PALMERSTON NTH- Jan. 7. South Island sheep breeders were fairly well represented at the Manawatu and West Coast annual sales of Romney and Southdown rams, which concluded at Feilding today. The Romney sale was conducted against marked buyer resistance, though bidding was brisk enough at levels considerably lower than last year’s, and was as usual concentrated on offerings from more firmly established successful studs. As a contrast to the conservatism of yesterday in the case of Romneys, today’s sale of Southdowns was buoyant, and a local record tor a Southdown ram was established. The average for the Romney sale was 266gns, as against SMgns last year. The total realiaatlon was 40.965 gns, whereas in 1956 it was tt,9lsgns and in 1956 56,M0gns. Highest -prices came, as has been the rule over the last decade, from the Bankhead stud of Brown Bros. (Feilding). whose top-priced ram of 2200gns was bought by J. G. Alexander. of Maxwell. Third best price for a Romney was paid by Mr A. S. Holms (Invercargill), who will take South Bankhead Twin at 950gns. J. D. Marr (Methven) bought one from this Feilding breeder at 600gns. Apart from another Canterbury breeder, F. Gallagher, all other buying for the South Island was by Southland buyers. Mr Gallagher took a ram at 180gns from T. E. Craines* Feilding stud. touchdowns A local record for Southdowns was day, when the Arnage Land Comestablished with the first lot of the pany, Ltd. Another stud whose offerings were deservedly keenly sought was that of Dalzell Bros. (Feilding). South Island buyers who took stock from thus stud were Collin Bros. (Greendale, Canterbury) and P. Gibbs (Nelson) at 250 and 230gns respectively. i Other Canterbury and Marlborough breeders to buy were H. A. Petrte i (Swannanoa), one at 300gns. from w. R. Oakley (Waip.ukurau); L. D.
