38-MILE RUN BY FUCHS

“Going Seems Better”

SCOTT BASE, January 6.

On his last run his party covered 38 miles, according to a message from Dr. Vivian Fuchs which originated at 10 a.m. today New Zealand time. Dr. Fuchs said that the vehicles had caught up to the dog teams. The 38-mile run compares with the average of less than 20 miles a day since the party left South Ice on Christmas Day. “It is. hoped to do 50 miles tomorrow,” Dr. Fuchs radioed to Scott Base through Petty Officer Peter Mulgrew’s radio at the pole station. The British traverse party gave its position as 85deg 15min south Dr. Fuchs thought it was doubtful if the dog teams would now be able to keep up with the vehicles. He said that the going now seemed to be improving, but it was too soon yet to give an estimated time of arrival at the South Pole.
