TALKS ON CYPRUS Governor Now In London
(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 9 p.m.) LONDON, December 31. The new Governor of Cyprus. Sir Hugh Foot, arrived in London by air today for high-level Government talks.
At the airport he said that as a result of his personal cpntacts in Cyprus, he had “a picture of everyone being* fed up with the situation and anxious to get out of it.
“That is the most encouraging thing about the situation,’’ he said.
“They want to find a road out of it and because of that there is some prospect for the future.”
The Governor declined to express any views about Archbishop Makarios, leader of the Unron-with-Greece movement, beyono saying that in the streets he had heard the Greek Cypriots saying they wanted him back. Sir Hugh Foot said he had purposely avoided Athens on his return to London. If he had gone to Athens it would have raised the question of who he should see and talk to there. “I have been concerned about the speculation that has been made by people who have tried to pin their own private pet plans on to me. That kind of thing is not doing any good. Speculations are not helpful at all.” Terrorist Leaflets Leaflets signed by the Eoka terrorist movement leader Dighenis were circulated in Nicosia tonight threatening to “resume the armed struggle soon Unless our just demands are met.” The leaflets were circulated 24 hours after the new Governor, Sir Hugh Foot, left Cyprus on his way to London with secret proposals for the island’s future.
