The Honours List

The knighthood for Mr Justice K. M. Gresson, announced in the New Year honours list, is the traditional and fitting honour conferred upon puisne judges as they rise to seniority among their brethren. The public as well as the legal profession will feel that this honour is particularly appropriate because it marks his assumption of the presidency of the newlyconstituted Court of Appeal. Mr W. E. Hale’s knighthood fittingly honours a long period of leadership in the dairy industry. Of the three knighthoods in the list, that given to Dr. E. Marsden will have the ■widest and most general interest, because Dr. Marsden is New Zealand’s best-known scientist in this age of the ' scientist. Dr. Marsden came to New Zealand to an academic appointment in 1914. He was head of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Re-

search for many years, and later was New Zealand Government scientific liaison officer in London. During the war, Dr. Marsden’s work in pioneering the development of radar distinguished himself and New Zealand. After his retirement from official service, Dr. Marsden was invited by the Royal Society to visit South Africa to give the society’s annual Commonwealth lecture on atomic energy, an honour that fell most appropriately to one who, as a young man, worked with Lord Rutherfotd. Christchurch people will warmly approve the honours conferred on Mr W. P. Glue, for his unsparing service to local government over many years, Mr W. H. Down, for long service to sport, notably hockey, and Mrs Adelaide Rose, who has given outstanding service to the Plunket Society and other social organisations.
