MRS A. E. WILSON

(New Zealand Press Association) HASTINGS, December 30. The death occurred at Napier Hospital on Saturday of Mrs Alice Ethel Wilson, widow of the late Rt. Rev. Cecil Wilson, former Bishop of Bunbury, Western Australia, and for 17 years Bishop of Melanesia. She was in her eighty-first year. The fourth child of the la'e Churchill Julius, Archbishop of New Zealand, and Mrs Julius, Mrs Wilson was born in England. At an early age, she accompanied her parents to Australia when her father was appointed Dean of Ballarat and later, when he was given the See of Christchurch, the family moved to New Zealand.

In 1898, Miss Julius married Cecil Wilson, Bishop of Melanesia, in Christchurch Cathedral. Until 1911, the couple lived in Norfolk Island, the headquarters of the Melanesian Mission. When Bishop Wilson retired from that position, the familv moved to Adelaide where he was appointed rector of Walkerville and Archdeacon of Adelaide. In 1918, the Bishop was appointed to Bunbury, Western Australia, and it was there that the family remained until his retirement in 1938.

From 1911 to 1918. Bishop and Mrs Wilson lived in South Perth, but on the Bishop’s death in 1941. Mrs Wilson came to New Zealand and established her home ui Napier. Mrs Wilson is survived by two sisters, Mrs Arthur Elworthy, of Christchurch, and Mrs Percy Elworthy, of Havelock North.

Of her seven children, only two are in New Zealand—the Rev. John Wilson, vicar of St. Luke’s Havelock North, and Mrs R. Harman, of Christchurch. Two sons and a daughter are in Australia and two daughters are in England.
