AUCKLAND CUP WON BY RED EAGLE

"The Press" Special Service AUCKLAND, January 1. Hie Matamata four-year-old, Red Eagle, outran a field of strong stayers for an end-to-end win in the Auckland Cup at Ellerslie today. None was able to match his pace, and he finished a fast gallop six lengths ahead of Passive.

Red Eagle was a popular favourite and there was great enthusiasm when he came to the last furlong looking all over a winner. In a win pool of £36,578 10s on the race he carried £8239, and on the place machine he was entrusted with £6863 out of £51,517 10s. A chestnut by Revelation, which got Rev. the winner of the race in 1952, Red Eagle is raced by Mrs M. Cameron of Cambridge. He was bred by the late Mr Cameron from the Balloch mare Lady Cometary, and he has been expertly prepared by the former successful light-weight rider, M. A. Martinovich, who won the cup on Swanee in 1949. From the start of the last mile Red Eagle ran varying distances ahead of his 20 opponents. Six furlongs from the end he was three lengths clear and coming to the straight he was out by five or six. He finished a brilliant gallop in 3min 19 3-ssec, which is the equal of the course record for two miles. Others which have made the same time were the cup winners Rev. Arawa (1954), and Tesla (1955). Passive was the next best backed after Red Eagle, and Yeman (fourth) was the third favourite each way. Passive had her chance, being favoured with a good run on the inside, so did several of the others, although Yeman paid the penalty for being a back runner and struck slight interference when improving his position, and True Bridge beat him for third place in the last stride or two. Red Eagle was ridden a well judged race by the young jockey, A. M. Dulieu, who has ridden him several times this season A member of a racing family, Dulieu comes from Matamata. Today’s win was easily his best. The Takanini colt, Second Earl, this season’s leading two-year-old. triumphed over difficulties for an impressive victory in the Great Northern Foal Stakes. Over the last furlong and a half his rider, R. Q. Forbes, was hardly able to manage him, having broken his off-side rein. Towards the finish Second Earl ran about badly and in the end he was close to the outside rail. In spite. of these difficulties he still won by two lengths and a half and ran the six furlongs in Imin 11 4-ssec, which is one-fifth of a second outside the race record set by Coleridge in 1954, and equalled by Yahabeebee the next year. Now four, Yahabeebee followed an end to end win in the Railway Handicap on Boxing Day, with an all the way victory at weight-for-age in the King’s Plate, one mile. Yahabeebee beat five opponents for speed, and ran the distance out strongly to win by seven lengths in Imin 35sec—a race record.

The off-course double, Red Eagle and Melanion (Newmarket Handicap), paid £ll 2s for £l. Conditions were again very favourable, the weather being fine and sunny. The attendance was 34,785, compared with 18,825 on the third day last year. The totalisator on-course handled

£305,780, including £63,722 15s on the doubles, compared with £184,195 10s on the third day last year.

Cup Running^^^^ Yeman and Black last two into line for the Auckland Cup. As soon as they took their place in the gates the field went away to a quick, even start. Columbine, Honest John, Red Eagle, Mephistopheles, Passive and Somerset Fair showed up in the first furlong. Sea Hornet, Black Raven, Alluring, Yeman and Toporoa drifted, and Toparoa went further back when checked on the inside. At the end* of two furlongs Red Eagle was the pacemaker, with Mephistopheles at his quarters. Four lengths behind came Honest John and Somerset Fair, then Columbine and India. Passive and Flair followed two lengths further back. Mephistopheles continued to run Red Eagle close for the next half-mile, but as they made the mile post Red Eagle went quickly three or four lengths ahead and Somerset Fair joined Mephistopheles in third place. Alluring, Passive, Man o’ Mars, Flair, Columbine and India were closely bunched next, and Yeman and Toporoa were the last two. In the next furlong and a half Mephistopheles gave ground quickly. Flair joined Somerset Fair in the trailing position behirfd Red Eagle. Passive kept running strongly on the inside two lengths hack and Alluring, Man o’ Mars, India and Drowsing were the next four. Near the half-mile Flair started to wilt. Somerset Fair held second and Passive was following next. Six or seven places further back Yeman and Revolver started to improve their positions. As the field came to the straight Red Eagle began to lengthen his lead. Starting the run home he was out by five lengths from Somerset Fair, Passive, Yeman, Toporoa, India and Bridie. A furlong from the end Somerset Fair weakened and only Passive, Yeman and True Bridge were left in the chase. Red Eagle continued to gallop freely and he ran smoothly to the finish six lengths ahead of Passive. Two lengths and a half behind Passive, True Bridge went past Yeman in the last stride for third. Gay Lodge ran fifth, and Bridie sixth, followed by Alluring, Sea Hornet and Intuitive. Six lengths further back were Black Raven, Toporoa, Revolver, Columbine and Fettle. There was another gap to Drowsing, Man o’ Mars, Honest John, Flair, India, Somerset Fair and Mephistopheles.
