A. Geenty Rides Winners Of Double At Stratford

(New Zealand Press Association)

NEW PLYMOUTH. January 1. The Wanganui apprentice, A. Geenty, rode tbe winning double on the opening day of the Stratford Racing Club’s meeting at Stratford today.

He rode the New Plymouth mare, Anacapri, very capably to win the first leg, the Stratford Gold Cup, and in the second leg, the Douglas Handicap, he kept the light-weight, Searturn, in front nearly all the way to win in a tight finish with Marlyn and Lady Debra.

The double dividend for £1 was £74 8s 6d.

The racing was held in mild, overcast weather before a large crowd. The track was fast. The totalisator handled £53,360, compared with £57,046 10s on the first day last year.

The plaoings in the Kaponga Hack Handicap were altered after an inquiry into interference. Princess Robin, w’hlch finished second, was promoted to first, and Jubilee Rag, which finished first, was relegated to second.

R. W. Taylor, rider of Jubilee Rag, was charged with having caused interference to Grecian Belle, ridden by N. D. Riordan, causing Grecian Belle to fall a little more than a furlong from the post. The judicial committee took no action on this charge, but resulting from the evidence heard, it further charged Taylor with causing interference to Princess Robin. The committee contended that Taylor crossed over and allowed his -mount to continue to change ground. The committee considered Taylor should have pulled his horse on to a straight course.

Taylor was fined £lO and was reprimanded. Riordan suffered a bruised back from his fall.
