Comfortable Win For East Dome

The Gore pacer, East Dome, gave none of the others a chance in the Irwell Handicap at the Canterbury Park Trotting Club’s meeting at Addington yesterday. He was very slow to get into his stride and was well out of his ground early. Loyal Cis set a leisurely pace early, and P. M. Tapper took advantage of this with seven furlongs left by taking East Dome round the field to join the leader.

He worked clear with five furlongs and a half left and turned for home five lengths. in front of Loyal Cis, Responsive and Parable, with the others beaten off. East Dome had too much in reserve for the others and won with something in hand by three lengths. Responsive, also from Gore, battled on in the straight for second, four lengths in front of

Parable, which received a perfect run behind Loyal Cis all the way. Parable ran on well for his placing, two lengths in front of Loyal Cis, which did not run on as well as expected. Kelso made up a little ground in the straight for fifth, ahead of Spaxton, Phantasy and Bronze Indian. Phantasy and Spaxton lost ground at the start Fourth Edition and Stylish George • broke in the running.

The Second Leg Western Son broke badly at the start of the second leg of the double, the Islington Handicap, and took no part in the race. Arnhem also broke at the start, but he settled down quickly and soon joined the back of the bunch. Mighty Loyal led out from Girl Brigade, with Gold Moana, Dinnie Daley, and Arnhem next in single file. There was no change in this order until the last two furlongs, at which stage Arnhem began to drop out. Mighty Loyal and Gold Moana raced into the straight ahead of Dinnie Daley and Girl Brigade. Dinnie Daley looked likely to trouble Gold Moana, but Gold Moana responded best, and won well by two lengths and a half. J. L. Behms, driver of Dinnie Daley, lost his whip about the furlong post, and his horse battled on for second, three lengths in front of Girl Brigade. Mighty Loyal was a length back, fourth, with Arnhem almost pulled up.

Captain Free in Form Captain Free gained an overdue win when he outstayed the field in the Templeton Handicap. Zetland was first out, but Gold Cloud took over at the end of two furlongs and a half. Gold Cloud was two lengths in front of Zetland racing to the straight, with Seafield Lad, Johnny Guitar, Solemnity, which went to a break, Captain Free, and Adoration next.

Gold Cloud soon stopped badly and Captain Free continued his run to join Johnny Guitar and Seafield Lad in the lead. Captain Free had too much stamina for the others and he won by two lengths going away. Johnny Guitar had a good run all the way and he battled on for second, half a neck in front of Seafield Lad, which paced a sound race. Dalene made up ground from the home turn to get up for fourth, ahead of the tiring Gold Cloud. Lillium, after being well back, did well to finish next, ahead of Solemnity and Adoration

Zagar, Reticent, Night Wind, Bonny Venture, and Capull were pulled up.

Indiana Beats Favourite Indiana gave a sound display of trotting in the unfavourable conditions to win the Introductory Handicap. She took the lead at the end of three furlongs and was not afterwards headed. She opened up a lead of four lengths on Moon Boy and the tiring Scott’s Own racing to the straight, with three lengths to Alight, the only other horse with any chance. Moon Boy made a valiant effort to close the gap, but Indiana did not have to give of her best to win by half a length. Moon Boy recorded an outstanding effort to take second place. He galloped for a furlong in the early stages of the race, and did not ap-

pear to relish the conditions afterwards. He fought on strongly over the last furlong, and the first time he gets a firm track he should win. Alight, after breaking early, made up a little ground for third, but she was nine lengths back, two lengths in front of Scott’s Own, with Jean Able beaten off, followed by Lothario and Supervise. Easy for Spreadeagle Spreadeagle gained his third win for the season when he proved much too good for the field in the Lyttelton Handicap. He was restrained well back in the field most of the way, but moved up smartly wide out to follow Compeer as the field raced to the straight. Commander Spangle, Toka Boy, Quite Probable, Brenda Dillon, and Conquistador were han.diest of the others. Spreadeagle was clear as the field straightened up, and he came right away from his field to win easing up by 15 lengths.

Commander Spangle broke badly at the start and was one of the last horses in a spread-out field at the end of a furlong. He did well to take second place, three lengths in front of Compeer, which had raced clear with about three and a half furlongs left. Compeer covered a lot of extra ground. Conquistador, after losing ground at the start, showed speed to take fourth place, clear of Brenda Dillon and Quite Probable, with a gap to Fame at the head of a tired lot.
