THIRTY-SIX BOWLERS STILL IN SINGLES CONTEST

Borich Has Two Lives, Ravenwood Beaten

Three of New Zealand’s finest bowlers and another who has no previous claims to fame remain with two lives intact in the singles championship at the national bowling tournament in Christchurch. At the end of the eighth round in the singles on Tuesday, the 21-year-old P. C. Skoglund (Northern Palmerston North); W. H. Hampton (Nae Nae), who has always featured prominently in recent tournaments; and M. G. Borich (Hamilton), one of New Zealand’s greatest bowling personalities, have yet to be beaten. An unconsidered player from Marlborough, H. Todd, is the only other bowler of the 1024 who stepped on to the greens on Monday to hold ■ strong position with two lives intact.

For many, the greens on Tuesday were difficult. With a very heavy surface in the morning, the run increased rapidly as the hot sun dried them out. By the end of the day, the greens were in excellent order.

The immaculately dressed Borich, puffing away at cigars as he drew with uncanny precision or drove with tremendous gusto, soon became the favourite of the crowds in the afternoon rounds at the United club greens. Playfully answering the bantering of the crowd, Borich lived up to his reputation as this country’s most colourful player, yet his ability to drive with one bowl and draw with the next is the hallmark of a champion player. His close struggle to defeat the Dunedin player, E. H. Ravenwood, skip of the winning pair in 1952 and 1956, drew not only the undivided attention of the crowd but also its applause. In the seventh and eighth rounds, Borich went on to account for the first lives of H. Powell (Kahutia) and C. G. Goosman (Frankton Junction). One-lifers Still within easy reach of the title are several of the one-lifers. Among. them are E. Fox, the Christchurch R.S.A. club bowler who recently won the Madison Trophy for the champion singles: S Sneddon (Linwood), the only player to have won all three titles of the Christchurch centre; J. Lobb (West End, New Plymouth), runner-up to Pirret last year for the national singles title; Pirret himself; T. W. J. Barron, a very prominent Wellington competitor, and R. J. Andrew (Onehunga), the 1954 national singles winner. Many well-known names of previous tournaments have gone to the bank for the rest of the singles. J. H. Rabone (Auckland), T. T. Skoglund (Carlton), N. Orange (Balmoral), E. P. Exelby (Frankton Junction), C. L. Spearman (Christchurch R.S.A.), W. Freeth (Nelson), and E. C. Budd (Hataitai) have been eliminated, as well as the 75-year-old Riccarton Racecourse club bowler, H. Kebby. Kebby played remarkably well but was beaten by P. C. Skoglund (Carlton) and S. J. Sneddon (Linwood).

An interesting feature of the singles this year is that of the 32 one-lifers, there are 16 from the North Island and 16 from the South Island. In the past. North Island competitors have always held the balance of power. The following players will contest the concluding rounds of the singles on Saturday or as soon as they are available from the pairs:—

Two-lifers.—M. G. Borich (Hamilton), P. C. Skoglund (Northern). H. Todd (Marlborough), W. H. Hamnton (Nae Nae). One-lifers.—L. Hughes (Northeast Valley), R. Wylie (Taieri), E. Fox (Christchurch R.S.A.), E. B Watson (Hawera), P. F. Moir (Balmoral), S. Sneddon (Linwood). C. G. Goosman (Frankton Junction), M. P. Coughlan (Onehunga), C. G. F. Smith (Onehunga), W. R. Fleming snr., (Victoria), J. Simpson (St. Martins). M. M. Sunde (Oratia). A. BensonPope (Kaituna). G. K. Watt (St. Clair), R. D. Barron (Svdenham). A. H. McDonald (Ranfurly), T. Duley (Whakatane), J. R. Mills (Whakatipu). H. D. Marshall (Fendalton). C. H. Hain (Hutt) J. Lobb (West End, New Plymouth), G. E. Davies (Timaru), J. Pirret jnr. (Tuakau). A. Ruddock (Meadowbank), T. W. J.

Barron (Miramar). R. George (Ohakune). J. S. Bain (Wellington DJSA.), C. J. Emmes (Nelson R.S'_A). A. P. Pearson (Cromwell), A. Hitchen (Balmoral), C B. Gardner (Logan Park), R. J Andrew (Onehunga). Ravenwood Beaten

The most stirring encounters of the day was the duel between ■ Borich and Ravenwood, which attracted hundreds of spectators to the United Green. Down 9-2 after seven ends, Borich appeared to have met his master in the diminutive and experienced Ravenwood, but he fought back to be down 12-7 after the tenth end. On the sixteen head, Ravenwood lost his green and Borich took three to come within striking distance at 14-15. Trying to trail the kitty after some beautifully placed draws by Ravenwood, Borich missed and Ravenwood took two for the next head. Ravenwood burnt the eighteenth, and on the nineteenth, Borich went into the lead for the first time, 18-17. The crowd was immensely delighted with the play, and when Ravenwood drew level 19-19 on the 21st head after trailing the kitty, another head was called for.

It was then that the brilliant tactics of Borich came to light. With the pressure on but not the least perturbed he drew his first bowl on to the kitty. Ravenwood was also equal to the occasion, elected to drive and successfully sent Borich’s bowl to the ditch. Again Borich drew another finely judged shot on to the kitty, and Ravenwood drew both his next two bowls. With Borich lying three up on the head. Ravenwood considered for a long time what he would do. His decision was a drive, but he missed and gave the game to the clever Dalmatian Skoglund Beaten One of the major surprises of the dav was the elimination of T. T. Skoglund (Carlton) by I L Turnbull At the end of the eighteenth head Tumbu’! le<* Skoglund 17-14, but this margin was reduced by two on the nine-

Turnbull was having great difficulty in finding the weight of the green and his first two bowls on the last head were well behind the kitty, while Skoglund’s first two drew shots. Skoglund was lying three up, but a beautiful draw by Turnbull took the shot. Skoglund’s fourth bowl was astray and Turnbull, needing one shot for the match, again drew perfectly to take the match.

Apparently, however, his effort in this game was too much for him for in his eighth round game he was well-beaten by C. J. Emmes (Nelson R.S.A.), 24-7. T. T. Skoglund’s young nephew, P. C. Skoglund, was more fortunate. In his first match of the morning he beat E. P. Exelby (Frankton Junction), 15-9. He followed this up with a win over A. L Hutchison (Khandallah) in one of the best games seen on the Papanui green. The game was marked by magnificent drawing from both players. Skoglund took four shots on the twelfth green after trailing the kitty to his three bowls and a hat would have covered the four. Hutchison led 14-12 after the sixteenth head but one shot on the seventeenth and two more on the eighteenth—the last head played—gave Skoglund a narrow 15-14 win.

In the first round of the morning H. Kebby, the 75-year-old Riccarton Racecourse player, maintained the high standard which took him unbeaten into the afternoon play. With his last bowl he took the shot from J. Kitto (Ohai) to take the match 15 14. A. J. Charteris (Belfast), lost his first life through being unable to handle the slower conditions in the morning. L. G. Calder (Bluff) led him 12-4 at the ninth- head but thereafter Charteris gained points and on the fifteenth head he was only one point in arrears. Calder drew well on this head, however, to take three shots and win 16-12.

In the afternoon Charteris for the second time in the tournament met and beat N. Orange (Balmoral). Spearman Eliminated R. J. Andrew (Onehunga) drew away from his tough opponent C. L. Spearman (Christchurch R.S.A.) after the sixth head and proved too consistent. Concentrating determinedly on the game and oblivious to the large crowd of spectators, Spearman went through ballet steps as he chased his bowls down the green. At one stage he was kneeling pleadingly as he tried to will one vital bowl to the jack. Even though Spearman could not win at the eighteenth end when he was down 10-23, he played another head.

W. Freeth was eliminated when he was first beaten by the Caledonian bowler, W. J. Pockson, who was competing in his second national tournament Pockson, a third-year bowler, made a remarkable recovery after Freeth led 10-1 at the seventh end. The game finished because of the time limit at the sevententh end when the score was 18-11. Freeth lost his second life after a very close game against the Greymouth minor, R. H. McDonald, who won by two oh an extra end. The tall Aucklander, J. H. Rabone, was eliminated by the last bowl of A. Benson-Pope (Kaituna). The game was closely contested throughout and drew to a climax when at the twentieth end the scores were level. Benson-Pope had drawn a good shot with his second but this was eliminated by a precise running shot by Rabone. With his last bowl, Benson-Pope drew a fine shot to finish inches from the jack and take the game. The Wellington Empire Games nominee, E. C. Budd (Hataitai) was eliminated by another Dalmatian, M. E. Simich, of the small Oratia club. Budd had previously been beaten by P. F. Moir (Balmoral), 17-15 in a very close contest.

R. D. Barron (Sydenham), who beat A. Connew on Monday, was too good for E. P. Exelby on the short heads and won 23-13. This eliminated Exelby from the singles.

After winning a close struggle against the West End (Timaru) player, A. Duggan, 19-17, S. G. Common (Mona Vale), who played so well to take one of Pirret’s lives on Monday, lost his next two games and lives to E. Grimman (Caversham) and A. Ruddick (Meadowbank). Considering he has an artificial left leg, Common’s achievement in going as far as he did in the tournament was most creditable.

W. P. O’Neill (Carlton), one of the country’s finest drive experts, was surprisingly beaten in two straight games after finishing on Monday with his two lives intact. He was first beaten convincingly by the Te Rangi player, F. Hinton, 17-9, and then lost to J. W. Tyndall (St. Heliers), 15-11. O’Neill’s usuaUy devastating drives were far from their target, and his play in general was below his best.
