FLOOD REPAIR WORK
Rain Hampers Operations Repairs to flood protection works in the lower Waimakariri river continued all day yesterday until the wet weather prevented heavy machinery from operating. The river was in light fresh, but rain in the Arthur’s Pass area had not affected the level at the Gorge Bridge.
The rainfall at Arthur’s Pass from 7 a.m. until 8 p.m. yesterday was 2|in, and although the wind had changed it was still raining from a southerly quarter at 8 p.m. Breaches in the stopbanks . at Jury’s on the north bank, between the highway bridge and the railway bridge, were closed vesterday. and filling of the double breach at Wilson’s near Chaneys was continued until the heavy earthmoving equipment could no longer work in the wet conditions.
Carting at Engelbrechts went on all day for filling in the bay and improving access tracks. At this place, for the last few days
