Chess N.Z. TOURNEY CONTINUED J. R. Phillips Leads

J. R. Phillips, of Auckland, has a | clear lead or one point from Z.l Frankel (Wellington) at the end of the seventh round in the New Zealand chess championship. In the championship reserve section. K. M. Okey, of Taranaki, has a half-point lead from B. H. P. Marsick, of Taumaranui. A. Lentz, of Otago, has a clear lead in the second-class section. The game between Phillips and F. Hutchings in the sixth round developed into a series of complicated exchanges. It became apparent that Phillips had a strong threat as Hutchings. playing white, had his king driven to the edge of the board ana the white queen left out of play. In the championship reserve the position is still very open. Douglas, playing black against Okey. resigned when it appeared that he would lose his queen. As it happened the queen could have been saved, although Douglas’s position was not good, rne shortest game of the congress was played in the second-class tournament when Harrison, playing clack, mated Miss C. Carter on the fourth move after 10 minutes’ play. Phillips enhanced his chances of winning this year’s title by beating C. P. Belton in the seventh round, and having a clear lead of one point with four rounds to play. In this game Phillips, playing white against Belton, built his game round his knight on Q 4. and kept back on defence with veiled threats. As black’s game was crammed he was unable to save two vital pawns and resigned after 27 moves. During the game several interesting variations were possible, but white appeared to have the advantage, due mainly to the well-positioned knight.
