ADDINGTON MARKET Few Entries, Little Change In Values

Yardings at yesterday’s Addington market were not impressive. Entries were small because it was an off-day sale to cater for any urgent requirements of the retail meat trade, it being 12 days since the last auction. The next sale is scheduled for Wednesday, January 8.

Fat sheep values on the whole were well sustained, although the fat lamb market lacked buoyancy.

There was only a handful of store sheep. A very small yarding of fat cattle met a good sale. Values were largely unchanged, with any variation in sellers’ favour. No store cattle were offered.

Yardings in the store sheep section totalled 244 —226 lambs and 18 wether hoggets. The lambs were an attractive line which sold readily at 535. They were offered by H. Matson and Company on behalf of H. C. Urlwin (Cooper’s Creek). The wether hoggets made 56s 6d. FAT LAMBS The entry of fat lambs totalled 91 (23 of these were passed), compared with 1197 at the Christmas market. In the absence of competition the sale was not animated, even though some excellent quality lambs were to hand.. Good butchers’ lambs, however, continued to sell to reasonable advantage. The market was topped by N. D. James (Halswell), with the sale of one at 67s Id. J. Prestige (Riccarton) sold five lambs at 66s Id. and J. R. Tyson (Springston) disposed of 12 at 65s Id to 66s Id. Best lambs sold from 65s Id to 67s Id; and others 56s Id to 62s Id. Sales included:— Pyne, Gould, Guinness Ltd., sold: on account of Miss A. Burnside (Yaldhurst). 14 at 63s Id to 64s Id; J. FAT SHEEP There was an unusually light entry in the fat sheep pens, yardings totalling only 1404, compared with 3372 at the Christmas market, and 3910 at the previous sale. The quality of the entry was not particularly good. The demand was for only the best quality sheep, and there were some passings. The sale for all classes was largely on a par with late Tates, with some of the best quality hoggets dearer by ls 6d to 2s. Top price for wethers went to J. B. and C. R. Bayley (Femride), with the sale of 50 at 685.1 d to 76s Id. Scott Bros. (Dunsandel) sold 15 at 73s Id to 75s Id, with six at the higher figure. There were also several sales at 73s Id to 74s Id.
