River Protection
Sir,—l thank Mr L. C. Walker for his letter and congratulate him for the immense amount of work he has done in gathering and compiling the mass of information supporting the contention that Canterbury has an immense amount of wealth waiting to be tapped in its supplies of shingle and sand. What we lack is a band of men with grit and enterprise to gather in the reward awaiting such a body. To H.J.E. I wish to say that his afforestation project, and measures of control, are orthodox, and have been tried out all over the world with disastrous results. While we are growing new forests what is going to happen to Christchurch? Those men who are up-to-date favour the dredge. Large-scale marketing of shingle and sand would rival returns from Kawerau. —Yours, etc., HIRAM HUNTER. December 30, 1957.
