More Austerity For France
(Rec. 8 p.m.) PARIS, Dec. 29. France took another step into austerity today when the Government quoted tax increases which will send up the price f a wide range of luxury and household goods. Using the special economic powers voted by Parliament earlier this month, the Government decreed a 2J per cent increase in a tax affecting imported and home manufactured luxury products ranging from jewellery, beauty aids, radios, and refrigerators to Ashing tackle, truffles and caviare. Ordinary food products are exempt from the Increases. Gas. electricity, telephone, and social security charges, taxi fares, and petrol prices have already been increased.
