RACING Prince Filou Has Easy Win In Cup At Timaru

Prince Filou gave distinct promise of d notable future as a stayer when he won the Timaru Cup on the first day of the South Canterbury Jockey Club’s summer meeting at Washdyke on Saturday.

He ran out a mile and three furlongs and 150 yards much too strongly for the others and won just as _ easily as he had done against the sprinters at Wingatui a week earlier.

Prince Filou is a five-year-old gelding by Le Filou from Vain Princess, owned by Mr D. D. Fea, of Winton, and trained at Washdyke by E. J. Ellis. R. J. Skelton rode him back in the middle of the field for the nine furlongs, then brought him to the middle of the track for a challenge none of the others could cope with. A furlong out it was obvious that it was Prince Filou’s race. Prince Filou’s win was watched by a big crowd. The South Canterbury Jockey Club’s enterprise in staging a £lOOO cup was well rewarded: the on-course totalisator turnover of £53,200 for the day was a record for the club. The total for the first day, a Thursday, last year was £30,268 10s. Prince Filou carried £3774 of a doubles pool of £21,766 15s. Only Column £5043 ss, carried more. Tamarisk, a recent graduate to open company, rounded oft the day’s double by winning the Rangitata Handicap narrowly but well from Beau Revere. Beau Revere gave Tamarisk a hard chase from thejurlong, but went under by half a head. Tamarisk is raced in partnership by Messrs J. MacG. Inglis and J. S. Shaw and is trained by Shaw at Riccarton. He was ridden by N. Cowles, who resumed race riding after several months at the Hororata meeting.

There were 655 (444 oft-course) 5s tickets on the Prince FilouTamarisk combination, whose, supporters received £lO9 17s for £l.

Brianbra (Fairlie Hack Handicap) was the only successful favourite. The winner at the longest odds was Robes, whibh was successful in the Stafford Handicap. Her win dividend was £39 16s. Cruising, also trained at Riccarton, paid £2l 13s 6d when she won the Levels Hack Handicap. After early-morning rain the track was easy. All Over at Furlong

Prince Filou was eased away from a position on the inside in the middle of. the field near the three furlongs in, the Timaru Cup and none could match him for speed in the straight. It was all over at the furlong.. Column joined Loyal Chief in the lead running through the straight Desert Cloud and Money-Go-Round dropped into trailing positions. Loyal Chief went ahead by a length after leaving the straight and Desert Cloud followed alongside Column. Next, in line, were Motueka, Money-Go-Round, and Silver King. Prince Filou was in a gap behind them on the inner, running on terms with Bon Soir. There were no changes in the lead for the next* half-mile, but Mananui had worked forward two places and was alongside Silver King and Money-Go-Round. Column and Silver King joined Loyal Chief in the lead, again on the home turn, where Desert Cloud, Mananui. Bon Soir, and Motueka were close behind.

Loyal Chief and Column were done soon after, and Silver King did not have the lead for long. Prince Filou had been brought wide, and none of the others could live with him from the furlong. Motueka beat Desert Cloud by a neck for second. Silver King weakened but lasted for fourth two lengths back. He had inches to spare from the fast-finishing Shoal, one of the tail enders till late in the race. Bon Soir and Money-Go-Round were almost in line with Shoal, separated by heads. Next were Happy, Mananui. Fleur, Loyal Chief, and Column. The Second Leg

Tamarisk challenged resolutely and mastered Beau Revere in the last stride ir. the Rangitata Handicap, second leg of the double. There was only half a head in it, and then, there was a length to Her Ex, and three-quarters of a length to Royal Pal

Tamarisk followed Her Ex, Beau Revere, Golden Morn, and Pack Drill into the second furlong. Pack Drill went forward alongside Her Ex in the lead soon after, and Keep Time, Beau Revere, and Whipsnade followed in line, clear of Golden Morn, Tamarisk, Appreciate, Innesfell, and Coq d’Or.

Her Ex and Pack Drill led round the home turn, and were soon challenged by Beau Revere, which led into the last furlong. Tamarisk worked clear and challenged strongly. He had a gap to bridge close to home but responded readily and caught Beau Revere right at the end.

Her Ex was in no danger of losing third place, though Royal Pal was a strong finisher for fourth.

Pack Drill was a weakening fifth two lengths ahead of Coq d’Or, whose response was weak when called for an effort in the straight Next were Golden Morn. Count Aven, Coin's Edge, Keep Time, Grey Light Innesfell, Whipsnade, and Appreciate. Airephelia Successful Airepbelia recorded her third Win for Mr T. W. Langford when she out-finished the inexperienced

Romancing in the Juvenile Handicap.

Airephelia, a winner at Wingatui a week earlier, jumped out quickly from No. 2, dropped into a trailing position behind Romancing near the half-mile, then challenged determinedly in the straight getting up to win by a neck. This was Romancing’s first race, and it was a good one. He finished a length clear of his bracketed mate. Count Pierre. He sped into a trailing position after passing the half-mile and was in no danger of losing third place. Fourth, but four lengths back, was the win favourite. Waterfall. She had her chance, but could not muster race-winning finishing speed. Ghana was fifth in a gap ahead of the weakening Taitumu. Bay Ribbon was a fast finisher for seventh after a slow start staffokd handicap, or £225 six furlongs.—ll, 10 II a. Williams's ROBES (8) by Cas-
