CATHOLIC TOURNEY AT GISBORNE
R. Wong Wins Men’s Singles (New Zealand Press Association) GISBORNE. December 29. The 18-year-old Aucklander R. Wong won the New Zealand Catholic Tennis Association’s men's singles at Gisborne today, defeating his older and more experienced opponent, the No. 1 seed, E. D. White, of Auckland. 5-7, 6-1, 6-1. Wong’s lobbing game in the second and third sets more than offset his opponent’s skill and courtcraft. The women’s singles was won by the top-seeded Miss E. McNeill, of Wellington, whose steadiness and experience was too much for her opponent. Miss B. Troy, also of Wellington. Results:— Men’s Singles.—Semi-finals: R. Wong (Auckland) beat P. Keenan (Auckland). 6-4, 6-3: E. D. White (Auckland) beat J. McNeill (Wellington). 6-4, 6-1. Final: Wong beat White. 5-7, 6-1, 6-1. Women’s Singles.—Semi-finals: Miss B. Troy (Wellington) beat Miss S. Rogers (Auckland). 6-3, 5-7, 6-0; Miss E. McNeill beat Mrs H. Hinton (Hawke's Bay), 6-4, 6-2. Final: Miss McNeill beat Miss Troy, 6-2. 6-3.
Auckland Junior Titles.—J. H. Lockington (Sydney) beat G. Pascoe. 6-1, 6-0, to take the under-19 boys’ singles title in the Auckland Lawn Tennis Association’s junior championships for the second year in succession. The under-19 girls’ singles title went to Miss Diane Cummings, who beat \ Miss Robyn Jenkinson, 6-4, 6-I.—(P.A.)
