WOMEN’S CRICKET England Leads N.Z. By 100 Runs In Test
(New Zealand Pi AUCKLAND, December 29.
A record score for a New Zealand batsman in a test match save .distinction to the second day of the Second cricket test between England and New Zealand at Auckland yesterday. The scorer was E. Paton, a Dunedin laboratory technician, who played a leading part in carrying New Zealand’s innings score to' 130 after four wickets had been lost for 22 runs. Paton batted for 138 minutes and drove With great freedom against all of England’s bonders. The day otherwise mostly belonged to England which now looks favoured to win the match on the third and final day tomorrow.
England’s first innings closed at* 186, giving it an advantage of 56. and -by stumps it had lost three wickets for 44 in its second knock. It now has a lead of 100 runs with (seven wickets to fall New Zealand’s strongest hope lies in the fact that J. Wilkinson and C. Robinson, who between them scored 130 of England’s first innings, have how been disposed of in the secdhd innings.. Both fell to, ..the 21-year-old Dunedin school teacher, M. Speight, who was the mpst successful of the New Zealand bowlers in the first innings. Robinson Was well taken by the wicket-keeper J. Clothier after a snick and. Wilkinson was trapped leg before; England’s batsmen spent the last quarter hour of the day in heavy defence and Speight at close of play had bowled five overs for two wickets and no runs. Scores:
