CATERPILLAR INVASION
(N.Z. Press Association —Copyright) (Rec. 9 p.m.) MELBOURNE, December 27. Thousands, of caterpillars have invaded several Melbourne suburbs, and householders are battling desperately to save their vegetable and flower gardens. A Box Hill resident found caterpillars "crawling over everything —the lawn, garden, front gate, footpath and even the walls of the house.” She, said that four other houses nearby had been visited by the caterpillars, which were about three-quarters of an inch long and were dark green with a pale white streak down their backs.
Caterpillars infesting another suburb crawled along footpaths, up the walls of houses and into rooms. One householder said: “You hose them away but they come back.”
The assistant curator of insects at the National Museum, Mr A; Neboiss, said he believed the caterpillars to be a type of white cabbage butterfly. Several country districts in Victoria have recently reported caterpillar plagues. \
