Rain, not heavy, but persistent, coupled with a slight and continual Breeze, marred the opening day of the men’s national softball tournament being played at Memorial Park, Mount Roskill, today. Auckland had two relatively easy wins against Rotorua and Canterbury, while Hutt Valley, amongst the more likely tournament winners, romped, home over King Country and Waikato. Wellington, defenders of the Beatty Cup, were not much bothered to beat Rotorua. Results: Waikato 26, Canterbury 17; Auckland 19, Rotorua 12; Hutt Valley 26. King Country 10; Wellington 8, Rotorua 3; Auckland 15, Canterbury 5; King Country 23, Havre’s Bay 22; Hutt VaHey 14, Waikato 2. The draw for tomorrow is: Wellington v. Waikato, Hutt Valley v. Quadruplets Born.-—Quadruplets, all boys, were born to a Malay Woman in Singapore on Christmas Eve. The woman, Markanah Binteh Amat, aged 27, is already the mother of seven children.
