Radio Watch Being Kept

(From Out Own Reporter) TIMARU, December 29.

A continuous radio watch for flooding was being kept by officers of the South Canterbury Catchment Board after warnings of further heavy back-country rain, Mr A. L. Kirk, secretary of the board, said this evening Warning would be given by an amateur radio operator at “Ben McLeod.’’ at the headwaters of the Rangitata river. The . overflow in the south branch of the Rangitata h?d been shut off with the assistance of 64 farmers in the district, Mr Kirk said, and a temporary stopbank prevented the water from flowing over the highway and railway line. The Rangitata was still in a good fresh this evening, but it had dropped considerably from its highest level. A large number of stock was still isolated on islands created by the swollen river.

Persons in the affected areas had been warned by telephone of the expected heavy rain tonight, Mr Kirk said, and thev would be taking protective measures to the best of their ability
