SAWMILL BLOWN DOWN
Gale At Hanmer
A heap of wooden beams and twisted roofing iron was all that was left of a new sawmill at Hanmer Springs yesterday morning. The building had been blown down by the north-west gale during the night. Almost completed for the Hanmer Sawmilling Company, the wooden building was 70ft long and 20ft high. During the gale, the manager of, the company (Mr M. P. Lister) and several residents tried to remove machinery and building materials from the building before it collapsed. Sheets of bent and torn roofing iron were blown more than 200 yards. The gale also damaged fences and garages in the township. Trees in the Hanmer State Forest and numerous tents in the camping grounds were also blown down.
