Expensive Beer
A group of four Belfast residents who yesterday drove four miles north, over the Waimakariri river to Kaiapoi, to join friends for a brief Chnstmastide "spot” found their drinks much more expensive than they had bargained for. They did not spend long in Kaiapoi, but when they drove back towards Belfast over the Waimakariri bridge they found their way blocked by floodwaters that had surged through a new gap in a secondary stopbank. With little prospect of getting through for many hours at the very least they had a drive 60 miles or so through the Waimakariri gorge to get home.
