THE QUEEN WOMAN OF THE YEAR
U.S. News Agency’s Poll (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright; NEW YORK, December 26. Queen Elizabeth II was named woman of the year today in the annual poll taken by the American Associated Press. It was the third time -in a decade Her Majesty had had the title bestowed on her by women editors of the American newspapers affiliated with the news agency. She was voted top feminine personality in 1947 when she married Prince Philip and in 1953, the year of her coronation. The particular event which brought the Queen the honour this year was her visit to North America. Among the nine other women voted outstanding in their fields were: Mrs Eleanor Roosevplt. public service; Mrs Daisy Bates. National Association for the Advancement of Coloured Peoples’ leader who headed the Little Rock integration fight and Althea Gibson, the Harlem negress who captured most of the women’s tennis titles. Lucille Ball, who has become one of Hollywood’s richest women through a television production firm was said to be the outstanding businesswoman. Man of the Year Sharing top vote was Mr Nikita Khrushchev, the Soviet Communist Party secretary, who was considered by newspaper, radio, and television editors to be the man of the year by almost four times as many votes as were given President Eisenhower. Among the men the major news fieures were said to be: Billy Graham, evangelist; Mike Todd, film producer; Werhher Von Braun, rocket expert; Henry Ford 11, industrialist, and James Gould Cozens, author of the best-selling “By Love Possessed.”
