RACING Strong Field In £l000 Cup At Washdyke Today

The £lOOO Timaru Cup will be an event of major interest in South Island racing today. The Timaru Cup is the principal race and first leg of the double on the first day of the South Canterbury Jockey Club’s summer meeting at Washdyke. Cornflake, a form runner at this distance, was scratched yesterday, but the field is a strong one, and betting will be well spread. Mananui, Column, and Shoal should come to the fore at the end if the pace is strong.

The distance is 70 yards short of one mile and a half, and some in this field have no form to commend them beyond nine furlongs and a mile and a quarter. But whatever the character the race assumes from the start the contest should be keenly-con-tested. If Mananui comes out on top in the Timaru Cup there will be confidence in a stable double among doubles backers. Mananui’s stablemate, Innesfell.

t looks one of the form runners for : the second leg, the Rangitata > Handicap. Innesfell has good sprinting and . middle distance performances on ! her record, and if she runs true f to anything like her best form • she will run out a mile and 35 yards brilliantly. ) Mananui and Innesfell, will be • both ridden by the apprentice, B. s W. McDonald. They are trained by G. H. Murfitt, Jun., for Mr , O. F. Watson.
