NEW POTATO SORTER

A potato sorter designed entirely “freehand” and without drawings has been made in prototype form by a Hertfordshire farmer. It is designed for use with an elevating potato digger, receiving all matter from it with the exception of long haulms. It is kept level all the time by a simple, automatic, and inexpensive device, and can work on all levels in a potato field. Its maker claims that it can work as efficiently in darkness as in light, and that it will sort newly dug potatoes from stored ones or old seed, and give a clean sample every time.

The sorter consists of two bowls, one seven feet in diameter, one two feet six inches, and is powered by a motor of not more than two horse power. The larger bowl is inclined at an angle,- and revolves slowly. It is fed from the digger, and takes out all waste except spherical clods and stones. These are elevated with the potatoes in automatic buckets into the lesser bowl, which is fixed horizontally at the back of the big bowl, and revolves quickly. The maker claims that it gives a complete and final sorting without damage to the potatoes.
