Wellington Beats Central Districts On First Innings

(New Zealand Press Association)

WELLINGTON, Dec. 27. .Effective bowling by B. D. Morrison, R. W. Blair and A. H. Preston on a turning pitch enabled Wellington to dispose of Central Districts for 102 and take first innings points in the Plunket Shield match at the Basin Reserve today.

Wellington’s was 73 runs and with approximately four hours remaining there were hopes of enterprising batting, a declaration and a chase for outright points. The declaration did occur, but Wellington batted slowly and the afternoon play held little interest for the fair crowd. The loss of fully a day’s play through rain also took interest out of the fixture, but the receipts—£339—were good under the conditions. Central Districts appeared to have every chance with 12 runs up without loss in reply to Wellington’s 175 when the match was resumed today in bright sunshine and a light breeze. However, the pitch favoured the bowlers and Central Districts were always struggling. Only N. S. Harford looked really at home against the bowling. He lost his wicket when he swished at a bumper from Blair and was caught. Morrison put up a fine performance in bowling throughout the Central Districts innings, sending down 31 overs in 195 minutes and taking four wickets for 44 runs. Blair was accurate and economical and mustered up a fine speed at times. The right-hand offspinner, A. H. Preston, appreciated the soft pitch and spun the ball down far/more quickly than usualWellington’s second innings was disappointing. Even L., S. M. Miller did not seem to time many of his shots well in getting 49 in 101 minutes. The slow spinner, D. Park, kept a better length than in the first innings, but many Wellington batsmen were reluctant to use their feet against him. The finish might have been interesting had Wellington run up more runs by the tea adjournment, but R. T. Barber was com-

pelled to bit on for another 30 minutes which left the balance of the match a- mere formality. Central Districts were content to play out time, losing two wickets for 21 in 53 minutes.
