The South Island Motor Union last evening expressed regret at the illness of Mr W. R. Carey, its only surviving life member. “He has done more for motoring than anyone else in this country,” said Mr C. M. Rout (Nelson). Mr E. C. Champion (Canterbury) said that although he had had “tussles” with Mr Carey, he shared this respect for his service. Mr J. H. Phillipps, a wellknown cricket administrator, will retire from his position of staff manager of the Shell Company of New Zealand on December 20. He has been with that company for 35 years. Mr Phillipps„ was manager of the 1949 cricket team to England and will again manage the 1958 side.—(P. A.)
