CRICKET COLTS SCORE SLOWLY IN AUCKLAND TRIAL

(New Zealand Press Association)

AUCKLAND, December 6. f Favoured by a devastating spell of bowling by D. B. Morrison, of Wellington, who took four wickets for 17. W. M. Wallace’s XI ended the first day of the national colts’ cricket trial at Eden park today with a commanding advantage over L..D. Smith’s XI. Wallace’s team scored 152 runs between 10.30 a.m. and 4 o’clock, and Smith’s team, by general reckoning the weaker batting side, had lost four wickets in scoring 47 runs by stumps. Blustery winds and occasional showers reduced the attendance to a handful and made the rpatch as much a trial of spirit as of technique. But so thoroughly had the youngsters absorbed the lessons of their four days of coaching by Mr Wallace and others, that they entered upon the contest as if playing for the Ashes with the world championship also at stake. The utter determination to eschew mistakes and to be completely concentrated upon the task in hand no doubt accounted for a test match rate of scoring: yet, on the balance, this was all to the good. As Mr Wallace himself remarked, the success of the coaching schol and the capacity of the players in it to produce good performances inevitably will increase the competitive aspect of Plunket Shield cricket and. from a considerable experience, Mr Wallace is convinced that New Zealand cricket is always richest when the

competition for every place in a test team is keenest. Scores today were:— W. M. WALLACE’S ELEVEN J. W. D’Arcy, retired .. .. 51 B. A. Bolton, b Sparling .. 37 B. W.
