There were 3,500.000 Jews in countries under Communist regimes and almost no possibility of effective co-operation between them and those in the rest of ♦he Jewish world. Dr. S. Levenberg, vice-president of the World Jewish Congress, told the national conference of the British section •n London. He added that Jews were officially recognised as a distinct nationality within the Soviet Union, yet the Jewish minority was the only one which had no corporate existence and which lacked any effective institutional expression j for its cultural needs. "The present fate of Russian i Jewry is without precedent in i Jewish history." he said.
