Bigger Prizes For British Open

An additional £llOO in prize money has been allocated to the British open golf championship, bringing the total to £4850. The first prize remains at £lOOO. but the additional money is to be spread over the lesser awards. The second prize will now be worth £650. third £5OO, fourth £350, fifth £3OO, sixth £250. seventh £2OO, eighth £l5O, ninth £125, and tenth £lOO. Sixty years ago the prizes totalled only £lOO, with £3O to the winner. Even in more modem times, in 1946, the total was only the same as the winner now gets. But since 1951 there has been a steady increase almost every year, until in 1955 the first prize of £lOOO was Instituted.
